49ers agree monster contract with highly rated free agent DT

The number 1 defense in the NFL is even better.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with free agent defender Javon Hargrave on a four-year, $84 million deal that includes a guaranteed $40 million.

Hargrave had a breakout season in 2020, totaling 60 tackles, 11 tackles, 10 saves, 66 QB runs and 48 QB hurdles. The 30-year-old defender has finished third in the NFL for the past two seasons with a win-by-pass rate of 18.8%.

With the first pick of 2020, Javon Kinlaw is struggling to stay healthy (he has missed 24 games over the past two seasons with various injuries), Hargrave strengthens the area that is believed to be needed San Francisco's best and ease the pressure on Kinlaw to rush back next season.

The 49ers have little output from the DT position in 2022 when Hassan Ridgeway, Kevin Givens, Akeem Spence and TY McGill add up to just 66 tackles, 3 capped and 12 lost tackles. All four are unrestricted free agents and likely won't be brought back in 2023.

Hargrave has scored four or more knockouts in five consecutive seasons and he has added 35 more pressures for four consecutive years.
